Julius Schulman : 1910-2009

Julius Schulman died last week at 98 and I thought of fantastic houses. Those clean modern lines, those wonderful mid century buildings hanging over Los Angeles. First thing that popped into my head was perhaps Schulman’s most famous photo, Case Study House #22 from 1960. I wanted to see the image again because it brilliantly captures Pierre Koenig’s architecture, and the lights of the City of Angels beneath. I love looking at Californian modernist architecture.

So I stumbled across this little documentary and heard the man talking about his photographs. How he captured the gardener on one picture, how the people seen in the back of another one were having beef sandwiches and beer. Hardly a word about the buildings. Julius Schulman talks about the inhabitants and their lives. “Children. Milk. Fruit.” I thought this man was all about clean modernist lines, but to Schulman they simply provided a nice environment for men, women and children to live in. “Human occupancy. There’s a human being in the house”.
