Often viewed as the definitive name in school bags it’s easy to forget that Jansport made its name producing innovative outdoor gear. The company was started by a group of hikers who created their own packs to take on walks. Designed to their own specifications and requirements, the packs were made to such a high standard that they amassed a huge following amongst other outdoor enthusiasts. Friends making specialist gear for their hobby became a major success story. Today, Jansport (together with The North Face) sell half of all backpacks in the USA.

The Jansport Heritage Series looks to celebrate and recreate the original pack designs that started the company off in the late 1960s. Every element of their construction is true to the original, from the design patterns to the sourcing of hardwear and material from the same suppliers.

We’re all about the product at Back And Forth so last month I picked up a Hoss pack. So far its seen me through a weekend camping in Minehead, Bestival and as a commuter bag for my daily bike ride to work. First impressions are that this is a piece of kit that justifies the asking price. The pack is solid, secure and comfortable. Everything in its right place and there’s plenty of storage for various items of different sizes and weights. Style wise its looks compliment trail parkas, waxed jackets and down jackets; so that’s the winter essentials covered. The only shortcoming I’ve found so far is that the side pockets could do with double rather than single popper closure as they sometimes pop open when packed to the top. Otherwise, this is going to do the rounds for years to come and it’ll be interesting to see how the nubuck panelling wears in.
