The ‘Prison Blues’
“Made on the Inside to be worn on the Outside” is the motto of the Oregon based company Prison Blues. Founded in 1989 with help of government funding, the brand has established itself since in the world of denim and work wear. All items are made by inmates of Pendleton Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, who earn considerably well in the factory and need to fulfill certain criteria to get their hands on one of the jobs, which are very popular ‘inside’ making it a three year waiting list to get in (but not out). The garments are not only made for sale, they are made as well to be worn by the inmates, making them some of the best dressed inmates in the world.
Now let’s have a look at the garments:
Sourced and made within the U.S, Prison Blues offer a range of jeans, coats, shirts, T-shirts, sweaters and accessories which are timeless, affordable and durable. The jeans and denim coats are made from rigid 14.75 oz cotton. This is probably one of the most durable work wear ranges you can find.
The 50s cut work jeans are the most popular item, a true American classic. My favourite of the line is the Hickory shirt, made from 8 oz 100% cotton, in a classic stripey Hickory material and comes short-and long-sleeved. Apparently the shirts run large, so if you are after one it’s advisable to go down 1-2 sizes. Most Prison Blues items are sold by dealers throughout Europe and the USA.
